The Registered Respiratory Therapist provides all aspects of quality respiratory therapy care to patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapy Technician as established by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

2. Must hold a valid license issued by the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care. (WVBORC)

3. Participates in required recredentialing for the NBRC Continuing Competency Program if credential obtained after July 1, 2002.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

1. 1 year of experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.Other duties may be assigned.

1. Provides daily respiratory therapy care to critical care and non-critical care patient areas through administration of various forms of therapy.

2. Responds to Cardiac and Pulmonary Arrests and performs CPR and other related emergency procedures.

3. Performs ventilator care and management.

4. Performs diagnostic testing including pulmonary function, drawing and analyzing blood gases and analyzing activated clotting times.

5. Operates, maintains and verifies the performance of therapeutic and diagnostic equipment through routine maintenance, operational verifications, calibration and quality control measures.

6. Evaluates patient status and makes recommendations to physicians concerning forms of therapy.

7. Assists the Physician/Intensivist with Interventional pulmonary procedures. This includes but not limited to bronchoscopy, endotracheal tube exchange, lung recruitment and apnea test.

8. Provides clinical education to respiratory therapy staff, nursing and other ancillary departments.

9. Serves as a preceptor for respiratory therapy students and new employees.

10. Performs set up, operates and maintains various types of oxygen and other therapeutic gas and mist inhalation equipment.

11. Supervises functions of lesser trained employees and assumes responsibility for shift supervision.

12. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient ranging from neonate to geriatric.
