About the role

Director, Regional Engineering

The scope covers Engineering and Operations support for all Engineering aspects of the Waste-to-Energy, Material Processing Facilities and Transfer stations within the region.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Regional Maintenance and Engineering, this role will create the Engineering strategy and prioritization while leading a team of regional engineers. This role partners with Operations, Corporate Engineering, HSE and PMO to align on the design strategy and execution. This role is called upon to support and resource business development needs as well.

Key responsibilities, deliverables and expectations:

  • Engineering Supervision: Manage and supervise regional engineering org and integration with corporate resources.
  • Technical Programs: Lead technical programs of strategic importance to regional goals.
  • Capex: Partner with leaders across other teams/organizations to deliver on annual and multi-year Full Potential Plans and Long-Term Maintenance/Capex Plans to improve system availability, capacity, and efficiency.
  • Operations and Maintenance Standards: Ensure compliance with Covanta's Engineering Design and O&M standards, define processes, road maps, budgets, and organizational enhancements to meet company goals and promote continuous improvements.
  • Technological Improvements: Set the technical vision, staying ahead of the industry with innovative and cutting-edge technologies. Take initiative in thought leadership and creativity.
  • Collaboration with Corporate Engineering: In conjunction with Corporate Engineering Team, lead the regional strategy for establishing the criteria, basis of design documents, major equipment specifications, bid evaluations and technical recommendations.
  • Leverage outside engineering firms: Direct and approve detail engineering design work completed by outside engineering firms and equipment suppliers.
  • Performance Tracking: Track, analyze and monitor technical performance metrics.
  • Feasibility Studies: Leading feasibility studies for new or retrofit designs, considering total cost of ownership (Capital, O&M Cost) and propose solutions considering both, technical and economic factors.
  • RCA/Problem Solving: Troubleshoot plant and process issues and work to support Root Cause Analysis and Performance Enhancements.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a mechanical engineering role is required.
  • Prior experience working in and around power generating plants or large industrial facilities and systems including boilers and combustion, steam generation and distribution, turbine generators, and balance of plant (steam condensers, feedwater pumps and systems, cooling towers and circulating cooling water systems, etc.).
  • Additional experience in industrial power plants and cogeneration is also desirable.
  • Prior experience managing technical personnel, either in a direct report or team responsibility setting, is required.
  • Must have experience in project management and construction of systems and equipment utilized in utility power plants or large industrial facilities. Experience in Waste-to-Energy facilities or other solid fuels is desirable.
  • Experience working in facility operations and/or maintenance support is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze data to identify trends is required.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills - with experience communicating across all levels of the organization - are required.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Ability to work independently and meet project schedules.
  • Must be able to manage multiple concurrent projects with minimal direction, while at the same time providing guidance to a technical team of direct reports.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering or related discipline), from an accredited institution is required.

Certifications (if applicable):

  • Six Sigma certification (Green Belt minimum) is highly desired
  • Leverage outside engineering firms: Direct and approve detail engineering design work completed by outside engineering firms and equipment suppliers.
  • Performance Tracking: Track, analyze and monitor technical performance metrics.
